Overview
Flicker is a pocket‑sized security device that safeguards personal belongings in shared or public spaces. Using a sensitive accelerometer, it delivers instant alerts through light, sound and optional phone notifications while maintaining a friendly, unobtrusive appearance.
User research with people who regularly leave bags unattended guided the need for reassurance without drawing attention. Iterations on attachment methods and volumes led to a soft cylindrical form capped with a textured ring.
Key Contributions
- Conducted interviews to identify functional and emotional requirements for discreet theft monitoring.
- Explored forms via CAD and 3D‑printed prototypes, focusing on light diffusion and tactile qualities.
- Designed multi‑modal feedback (visual, audible, digital) and conceptualised a companion app for configuration.
Outcome
Flicker offers peace of mind by discreetly monitoring belongings without burdening the user. The final design combines a soft matte body with a translucent section that glows when armed, blending security with friendly aesthetics.
