Overview
Stratus is a rugged handheld device that uses environmental sensors and onboard data processing to help adventurers anticipate sudden weather changes in remote areas. It reports pressure, temperature, humidity, wind speed and UV index on an E‑ink display, generating offline forecasts without cell service.
Key Contributions
- Researched meteorological predictors and selected sensors to enable offline forecasting.
- Prototyped ergonomic forms and tested them with users to ensure comfort and ambidextrous use.
- Developed a simple interface with passive and active modes and explored accessory concepts such as straps and quick‑exchange batteries.
Outcome
Stratus empowers hikers to make safe decisions by synthesising real‑time sensor data into intuitive forecasts. Its durable, ambidextrous housing and tactile controls support gloved operation, demonstrating how complex research can be translated into a concise product.
